Our trip started in the crowed streets of down town San Diego. There really isn’t any way to fully describe the looks one receives while loading up dogs, guns and gear in a metropolitan setting, as the onlookers scurry off to their cubicles. It’s quite comical.

I can’t really tell one from the other. About the only two dogs that stand out are the yellow male and the black female. Other than that, it’s 6 black males that all act and look about the same. Nice even litter.

We decided to do a quick afternoon trip this week. Just a fun outing to breeze a few of the older dogs with a young pup. The weather was not terrible, but by 3pm the mercury reached 91 degrees. We noticed that the dogs were pushing birds, and really struggling with pointing and trapping the roosters. Even though we had a nice high cloud cover, the heat was not really beneficial for man or dog. The best thing to do when it gets like that is post up, have a little lunch, and wait it out.

It’s been a whirl-wind few weeks around here.

It all started with the quail opener. We had a few early thunder storms, expected this time of year. It made for some wonderfully cool weather with much appreciated cloud cover.

We have now made a couple trips south in the past three weeks, and well I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised. The conditions must have been steady, and thankfully we have had a very cool mild summer. So far the bird numbers are holding, and looking good. Several of the ranches had 2 hatches, and we spotted young birds on more than one occasion.

Every year it amazes me how fast the days pass between the time the season closes and when we start preparing for the upcoming hunts. This year was no different, the days have come and gone and now its time to pull out all that gear and knock the rust off, so to speak. Time to mend holes in hunting vest, re-sole our favorite boots, place attention to the parts on our trucks that need repair or replacing, sort out shells and polish and clean up our trusty field arms.
